Here is the list of top 10 Bengali movies of 2015 that we don’t want you to miss.

1. EBAR SHABOR

This Arindam Sil thriller was released in January and it made tollywood audience begin their new year with a bang! The story was that of a murder of a famous actress, Mitali Ghosh (Swastika Mukherjee) being investigated by the police officer Mr. Shabor Dasgupta (Saswata Chatterjee). The story line involves really good mystery and some of the twists are so baffling that you will enjoy their unpredictable approach. If you have already watched it go for a repeat and if you are yet to make it before the year ends.

2. LORAI

A directorial venture of our very talented Parambrata Chatterjee, LORAI is all that you need to have before you can step into the next year. The story is set at a maoist disturbed village of Puruliya where an alcoholic retired footballer Sebastian Ryan (Prasenjit Chatterjee) is sent by the state’s sports minister to set up a football team in order to engage the villagers into some activities and turn their attention to football. But one fine day the coach gets abducted by the maoist leader and the struggle begins. He is later released but the project gets ceased by the government. However, the coach decides to carry on with his making of the team and the film thus sees some great acting from the entire cast in the struggle slot. Watch it for the marvellous acting and I promise you will not regret.

3. OPEN TEE BIOSCOPE

This film is a breather. After a long time tollywood has seen such an innocent script. The film begins with the home-coming of Fowara (Riddhi Sen) getting rusticated from his boarding school into a North Kolkata para. The film unveils the typical flavours of adolescence and how Fowara experiences even the greater truths of life like his birth from his unmarried mother and the other atrocities of survival. Yet the friendship and bond with his friends, his guilt of falling for his friend’s crush and his determination to stand for the right after his friend’s death stays with the viewers for a long time. This film falls into that category when the audience get a feel-good sensation after watching it. It has another important element that captures the hearts of those who view it and makes them go for it again, the quintessential spirit of North Kolkata’s para football. Even the music is good, you could connect with it. So it is a must watch of 2015.

4. BHEETU

This psycho drama has been directed by Utsav Mukherjee and my sole reason to pick this one for the list is the underlying message that the film conveys. Bheetu deals primarily with the lives of two sisters, played by Parno Mittra and Sudiptaa Chakraborty, how their lives have been shaped while growing up after a mental trauma from childhood molestation of the younger sister while the inability of the elder sister to stand up against the ordeal. The message that it conveys is the fear that resides within each one of us and how we need to overcome it to stand for what is right. I feel it is a must watch as it will show you some reflections that even you may have fears about. Lastly, it raises a very good question at the end… how safe is our city for not only women but anyone???

5. BELASESHE

After 30 long years, the magical pair of Satyajit Ray’s “Ghore baire,” Soumitra Chatterjee and Swatilekha Sengupta returns on silver screen to celebrate the love of a common aged couple in this Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee’s love tale with an unconventional twist. Biswanath Majumdar (Soumitra Chatterjee) announces to his children (Shankar Chakraborty, Rituparna Sengupta, Aparajita Auddy and Monami Ghosh), their counterparts (Indrani Dutta, Sujoy Prasad Chatterjee, Kharaj Mukherjee and Anindya Chatterjee) and kids that he is going to divorce his wife Aarti (Swatilekha Sengupta) after 49 years of marriage. This announcement is followed by a journey that discovers the hidden delicacies of the institution called marriage. And at the end…. naaa… watch it youself guys!!!!

6. NIRBAASHITO

This directorial debut of Churni Ganguly is a must watch before you go into 2016. This is tale of banishment of a writer from her own country. She is put to exile because of her free thinking and penning down her thoughts that doesn’t follow the rules of the so-called society attacking the religious fundamentalism and social patriarchy. It is said to have depicted a slice of the controversial writer Tasleema Nasrin’s life and her relationship with her pet cat. The cat which plays Baaghini in the movie is a treat to watch. It gives the film a different angle altogether.

7. SUDHU TOMARI JONNO

After all the above listed movies let’s talk about some commercial cinema now. Directed by Birsa Dasgupta, Sudhu Tomari Jonno released with other Tollywood biggies like Raajkahini, Kathmundu and Cross Connection 2. It is the tollywood remake of the original Tamil film called RajaRani. The story has four actors in lead, Dev, Mimi, Soham and Shrabanti. It’s a twisted tale of love, loss, betrayal and pain. Dev and Shrabanti get married off but cannot overcome their past, one with the pain of losing his love Mimi to death and the other to the pain of getting deserted by her love Soham on their wedding day. How these two broken people discover love within each other after marriage is please to watch. After Chader pahar this is the best performance by Dev in terms of acting. So amidst all the other genres you watch this is worth your watch.

8. BYOMKESH BAKSHI

The fourth in the series by Anjan Dutta, this Byomkesh Bakshi has a different Byomkesh. Jisshu Sengupta is Dutta’s new choice and this makes it a must in my list. Based on the famous novel “Kohen Kobi Kalidas” by Sharadindu Bandopadhyay, the master of movie-making, Anjan Dutta has again woven a delightful thriller. The story remains the same but it comes alive with Dutta’s touch and how!!! Each and every character of the movie has done justice to the roles given to them. Not even for a single frame of second you will feel to stop it and move forward. Such is the crisp of the narration and the script. Watch it asap!!!!

9. KATMUNDU

As we gradually move towards the end of our list, a comedy is necessary after all the serious movies that fill up the list. Kathmundu had a big puja release and everyone seemed to have liked it. The three friends Sidhu (Rudranil), Sunny (Soham) and Pablo (Abir) are ostracised by their evil boss Aiyoswami (Saswata). The work pressure affects them to that extent where Sidhu suffers from a partial memory loss disorder. This makes the trio take a leave from their regular stressful routine and go out for a holiday. They explore the exotic locales of Nepal and meet two other tourists Pallabi (Shrabanti) and Rai (Mimi). What happens next I will not tell you. For that you need to watch this. But one thing I can assure you and that is a roller-coaster comedy ride. Put it in your weekend schedule now!

10. RAJKAHINI

Lastly, we end our list with the grandest movie of the year coming from one of the greatest directors of Tollywood. Yes you are absolutely right. I am talking about Raajkahini. I will not even try in telling the cast and crew of the film and I am pretty sure that you all have already watched it. But I have included this in my list as without it my list would have been incomplete. Set on the partition plot, Rajkahini is weaved around a border between the two nations that runs through a brothel housing eleven women. It has showcased some of the best performances by Rituparna Sengupta, Jisshu Sengupta, Abir Chatterjee, Joya Ahsan and every other actor in it. Riddhima Ghosh’s performance stands out and she proves she is worth the role. The music is brilliant. Those who have watched it go for it again and those who haven’t yet please make sure you make for it before stepping into 2016.

Comment how many have you watched yet?
